Ecuadorian vs. Chinese roses: a specification-led comparison

Compare the farm specification and route, not a country-of-origin stereotype.

Ecuadorian or China-grown roses: what is the difference?

Wholesale buyers may compare roses grown in Ecuador with roses grown in China. Similar-looking flowers can differ by cultivar, grade, greenhouse or field conditions, postharvest handling, route, and landed cost. This article uses ‘China-grown roses’ to describe origin, not the botanical species Rosa chinensis.

What is associated with Ecuadorian rose programs?

Ecuador’s equatorial location and high-altitude growing areas can support distinctive rose programs. Cultivar, farm management, soil or substrate, light, temperature, and harvest specification all contribute to the result.

Depending on the cultivar and grade, an Ecuadorian program may offer:

  • Large-bloom grades.
  • Long or strong stems in specified grades.
  • Saturated, pale, bicolor, and specialty tones.
  • An opening form suited to the intended design.
  • Postharvest performance appropriate to a confirmed route and care protocol.

These attributes make Ecuadorian roses an important option for florists, importers, and flower distributors.

Buyers can source strong programs from more than one country when the farm, grade, and logistics are right.

Premium positioning should be supported by a specification, not by dismissing another origin.

Characteristics of rose production in China

China has expanded commercial flower production and offers roses across multiple price points, varieties, regions, and supply chains.

A China-grown rose program may differ in:

  • Bloom size and grade.
  • Stem length and strength.
  • Opening stage and behavior.
  • Vase life under the receiver’s conditions.
  • Consistency between growers and lots.

Quality can vary substantially by region, farm, cultivar, grade, and postharvest process—as it can in any origin.

What should a buyer choose?

The answer depends on the customer brief, available farms, route, handling capacity, and total landed cost.

A China-grown program may suit a buyer when its current specification, price, route, and local availability match the requirement.

An Ecuadorian program may suit buyers seeking a particular cultivar or long-stem and large-bloom grade. The decision should be based on samples, documents, and current lot data rather than a universal quality ranking.

During peak periods, confirm availability early and compare the total proposition: grade, pack, expected arrival, claims process, and landed cost.

How your order reaches you

Ecualand coordinates wholesale flower sourcing and logistics for its clients.

What Ecualand covers

We source from partner farms, coordinate the pre-shipment quality checks and the export documentation, and fly the order to the airport agreed with you.

What you cover

You collect the order at that airport and arrange onward transport to your own warehouse. Import clearance, duties and taxes sit with you or with the agent you appoint.

  • Amsterdam: consolidated departures on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight is direct. Orders start at one box.
  • Direct flights to other airports: from 100 kg, which is roughly four to five boxes, or 1,200 to 1,500 stems.
  • Lead time: at least one week, so the prepayment clears and the airfreight space is booked. For Valentine’s Day and International Women’s Day, order from December.
  • Freight: can be included when the order flies with us; otherwise the buyer arranges and pays it.
  • Payment: prepayment, quoted per order in US dollars.

Tell us which airport suits you and an account manager will confirm the route, the booking window and the current price list.
